Introduction of Boshan Zhengjue Monastery and Ven. Master Shi Renda
Boshan was known as Yanshen Town in ancient time. Administratively, it was part of Qingzhou. In the ninth year of Emperor Yongzheng during the Qing Dynasty, Boshan County was founded. Today, it is Boshan District of Zibo City.
Boshan Zhengjue Monastery was originally built during the East Jin Dynasty, rehabilitated during the Song and Jin Dynasties. So the monastery has a history of over 1,600 years. Since Zhengjue Monastery was located to the east of Yanshen Town, it was called Dongcheng (East City) Monastery and had a pagoda, the East City Pagoda.
The Monastery is not only an ancestral site of Tathagata Chan, but also a site of Patriarch Chan. Therefore, it has a remarkable and outstanding lineage. The great Chan master Ven. Bao Zhi (an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva), the National Religious Advisor of Emperor Wu of Liang Kingdom during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, became a monk here. The third Chan Patriarch, Ven. Seng Can, and the fourth Patriarch, Ven. Dao Xin, lived and practiced Buddhism here.
Chinese Chan Sect can be categorized into two branches: one is Tathagata Chan whose representative is Ven. Bao Zhi; the other is Patriarch Chan introduced by Patriarch Bodhidharma. The lineage of the latter is listed as: the first Patriarch Ven. Bodhidharma, the second Patriarch Ven. Hui Ke, the third Patriarch Ven. Seng Can, the fourth Patriarch Ven. Dao Xin, the fifth Patriarch Ven. Hong Ren, and the sixth Patriarch Ven. Hui Neng, after whom “A flower blooms with five petals”, Chan Sect evolved into five sub-factions and grew in popularity.
In his Chan ideology, Ven. Dao Xin inherited the core spirit of Patriarch Bodhidharma. He incorporated the practice of “Mind is the foremost among all Buddhas” as taught in the Lankavatara Sutra, One-practice Samadhi of Saptasatika-prajnaparamita Sutra and the Prajna View of the Diamond Sutra. Ven. Dao Xin advocated One-practice Samadhi and Samadhi through Chanting of Buddha’s name, combining precepts and Chan practice, mutually reinforcing perceptions and actions, associating gradual cultivation with sudden enlightenment, undertaking meditation and farming activities simultaneously. Such ideas became an important milestone in the history of Chinese Chan Sect and even in the history of Buddhism.
Ven. Master Renda, the Abbot of Boshan Zhengjue Monastery, was born in Pingquan County, Hebei Province in 1942. He graduated from the Tianjin Light Industries Institute (now the Tianjin Science and Technology University). He was a senior professor-level engineer, specializing in food bio-chemistry, who made many significant contributions and was awarded the title “Pioneer of the Century for Chinese Bean-based Products” by the Ministry of Human Resources and State Scientific and Technological Commission.
Ven. Master Renda took refuge under Ven. Master Nengxing at the Fayuan Monastery of Beijing in 1992, and subsequently became a Buddhist monk. He received his full ordination from the great master Ven. Master Benhuan in Huangmei Sizu Monastery in Hubei Province in 2000.
Ven. Master Renda’s tonsure master was Ven. Nengxing who received his full ordination from the great master Ven. Master Xuyun and obtained the Dharma scroll from the great master Ven. Master Benhuan and became the 45th generation successor of Linji Faction of Chan Sect. Ven. Master Nengxing also obtained the Dharma scroll from the great master Ven. Master Foyuan and became the 14th generation successor of Yunmen Faction of Chan Sect. Ven. Master Renda inherited the Dharma from Ven. Master Nengxing as the 46th generation successor of Linji Faction and obtained the Dharma scroll from Ven. Master Yongxing in Hong Kong to become the 46th generation successor of Tiantai Faction.
In 2002, at the request of believers who kneeled down and pleaded repeatedly, Ven. Master Renda started to rebuild the ancestral monastery of Chan Sect, Boshan Zhengjue Monastery. At the beginning of the construction, the monastery was deficient in both funds and labor. Since 2002, despite his old age, venerable master drew more than 2000 mL of blood from his vein to be used as ink and invited calligraphers to transcribe Mahayana sutras and mantras of over a million characters as gifts to devotees.
In 2005, at the age of 64, Ven. Master Renda departed from Boshan Zhengjue Monastery for Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province with three-step-one-prostration, a journey of hundreds of miles. During 2011 and 2012, he departed again for Mount Jiuhua in Anhui Province from Boshan Zhengjue Monastery with three-step-one-prostration and completed the pilgrimage in 623 days.
Ven. Master Renda took the three-step-one-prostration pilgrimages to sacred sites not only for fulfilling his own promises, but also for expressing gratitude to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dragons and Dharma Guardians for their protection and support in the restoring and construction of Boshan Zhengjue Monastery. Through the pilgrimages, he also wanted to call upon the public to share his vow, conduct and practice honestly. Particularly in today’s overly materialistic society, a certain duration of ascetic practice is of vital significance for monastics in learning dharma and self-cultivation. In addition, the Ven. Master practiced asceticism at such an old age to pray for blessings to all living beings and repented on behalf of them! He wished for the prosperity of Buddhism and Correct Dharma, a flourishing country with people living in peace and everyone would be auspicious!
While undertaking the busy work of monastery construction, the venerable master proposed the cultivation philosophy: “Be united. Construct the monastery and perform our cultivation simultaneously. We grow up with Zhengjue Monastery together.” He upheld the cultivation essentials: Observe precepts strictly; incorporate and absorb the philosophies of other schools; emphasize Kindness, Compassion, Joy and Generosity; Chan, Pure Land, Teachings and Vinaya. He maintained the following methods: Investigate and recite Diamond Sutra; Uphold the Great Compassion Mantra; Practice the method of Perfect Penetration of the Ear-faculty and One-practice Samadhi. He led his disciples to uphold the correct Dharma and cultivate diligently, to train the mind through practical experiences in the construction of Zhengjue Monastery and accumulate blessings and wisdom.
After fourteen years’ hard work, Boshan Zhengjue Monastery was successfully completed and consecrated on Oct. 4th, 2015. The monastery can accommodate over a thousand monastics and laymen to practice and study together. It operates under the system for forest monasteries. The monastery is devoted in creating a favorable cultivation environment and fostering Sangha talents. Take precepts as the teacher, and erect the dharma streamer highly. The monastery takes the Chan methods as guidelines, advocates the corroborative practice and realization. Cultivating the heart is the top priority since with the purification of the heart, comes the purity of the world. Based on the Tiantai Sect’s philosophy, the monastery proposes the perfection of Chan and other Dharma teachings, and to use both samatha and vippasana to break the self-mark and self-attachment. The monastery enacts the Dharma Practice Essentials which call for practitioners to cultivate at the present moment, live a life filled with sunshine, be patriotic to the nation and Buddhism and serve the public.
Boshan Zhengjue Monastery does not sell entry tickets and tall incense sticks, nor fortune-telling service. The monks do not accept monetary offerings; but return to the fundamentals of Buddhism and uphold the Vinaya strictly. Board and lodging expenses are waived for visitors; the monastery is working on establishing an authentic cultivation place to purify the mind. Buddhist classes for businessmen and summer camps pay no wages; Chan Tea Classes and Musicals are all non-profit oriented.
Chan Tea of Boshan Zhengjue Monastery integrates Chan meditation, tea ceremony, poetry, music and regime into one, uses tea to assist Chan, taste tea and savor the heart. The enjoyment of Chan and fragrance of tea are elegant and profound. It aims to propagate excellent Chinese traditional Chan Tea culture, reveal sincere, kind and refined art, enhance solemn, graceful and elegant qualities and improve practitioner’s morality and integrity. It is not only excellent for self-cultivation but also suitable for stage performance.
Chan Tea has been approved as the intangible culture heritage of Shandong folk custom. Chan Tea Musical has also been listed in the Catalogue of Recommended National Cultural Works by the Ministry of Culture of China.
The newly rebuilt Boshan Zhengjue Monastery orientates itself to culture, education, charity and sustainable development. The monastery develops Sangha talents through the triple studies of precepts, Samadhi and wisdom enacted by the Buddha; works on establishing the monastery into a spiritual home for followers, an authentic cultivation place which is patriotic to the nation and Buddhism, beneficial to the society and all.
